Commentaire: The Turn of the Screw marked the Open Air Theatre's first collaboration with English National Opera. Sitting on the edge of a forest he conjures up a jumbled fairy-tale, and then falls asleep in his sleeping bag to experience a nightmare which is the show itself. The show attracted great praise, with many critics commenting on how well the show suited an open-air venue. It won the Olivier Award for the Best Musical Revival. It was later announced that the production would be re-created in the Open Air Theatre in New York’s Central Park during July and August 2012. (plus)

The Kopit version also incorporated songs from other Cole Porter musicals - but a different selection of songs from the Richard Eyre version. Commentaire: Based on the book by Mark Twain, the show was first produced on Broadway in November 1927. It was revived in 1943 with six new songs, including the showstopper “To Keep My Love Alive”. In the 1943 revival, which opened just five days before Lorenz Hart’s death, all the characters appeared in military uniforms. The first London production was at Daly’s Theatre October 10th 1929 with Harry Fox and Constance Carpenter. It was given a more “English” title - “A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur” - and ran just 43 performances. (plus)

Commentaire: Originally produced in New York April 1937 it was a show with a large cast of teenagers, no stars and modest scenery. It also offered a larger collection of Rodgers & Hart hit songs than any other of their shows. It was a very profitable hit in the USA. However, it waited over 40 years before this, its British premiere. The book was re-written by George Oppenheimer, changing most of the character names and re-arranging the order of some of the scenes. A number of performers whose names were announced in the pre-publicity never actually appeared - though no reason was ever given - and the production itself was roundly condemned for its “stunning awfulness and inanity”. The cast fared no better, described as “universally unable to sing, dance, act or even move on stage with any semblance of adequacy.” (plus)
