Commentaire:

Presse: Mail on Sunday “WATCH OUT BOY, SHE'S A MAN-EATER.” “Out of designer Tom Scutt’s psychedelic, tentacled plant steps Vicky Vox, a fabulous US drag queen. She’s got big lungs, big booty, big heels, and a very big stage presence, absolutely nailing it as this seductively demanding, man-eating diva. MONSTROUSLY GOOD FUN"

The Times "Gloriously succulent and deliciously sinister; exuberantly excessive, and as thrillingly, dangerously seductive as a beribboned bouquet of triffids. The whole ensemble is terrific. Marc Antolin gives Seymour real guts and frustration, and as his beloved co-worker Audrey, Jemima Rooper is no dumb blonde, but a damaged young woman with a broken heart full of hope." "AN ABSOLUTE RIOT"

Financial Times “Inventive sets, wild costumes and a predatory drag-queen flower: what more do you want? There’s exceptional work from choreographer Lizzi Gee and designer Tom Scutt, whose approach to costume is to start with a ton of green glitter and a glue gun, then send out for more. Matt Willis is nothing short of stupendous and a series of quickfire cameos all reinforce his belting star quality."

Attitude "MAGNIFICENT" "Director Maria Aberg’s production keeps pulling surprises - from Vox’s first appearance to a big finish that stages the apocalyptic climax of the original show as a bonkers showstopper. The mother of reinvention…you should BEG, STEAL, BORROW or even KILL TO SEE."

WhatsOnStage.com "Little Shop of Horrors has never looked quite as exciting or outlandish as it does here in Maria Aberg's dynamic new staging, with inspired, witty designs by Tom Scutt. Lizzi Gee's tense, hyperactive choreography adds to the sense of exhilarating menace The show vibrates with a sort of grim vitality that delights and alarms. There is craziness aplenty in Matt Willis' outrageous, magnetic turn as Audrey's unhinged dentist boyfriend, and in Forbes Masson's money-grabbing flower-shop owner, just one facial tic away from Max Bialystock in The Producers." "THIS IS A HELL OF A SHOW. DO NOT MISS IT"

Gay Times “US drag sensation Vicky Vox as the human-eating, evil plant Audrey II ramps this up to a five-star show. From the sparkling costumes to the faaaaabulous voice and characterisation, this diva (sorry, plant) didn’t come to play. She came to slay! From the numerous chuckles off stage to an entrance that’d make even Mariah Carey envious, the genius casting of Vicky Vox shows exactly why LGBTQ characters on stage need to happen evermore; diverse in storytelling and audiences’ clear lust for something new."

The New European "The first sight of Tom Scutt's set for this production is one of the most impressive visions I've seen anywhere in theatreland this year. FUN AND EPIC ON A DELIRIOUS SCALE."

The Independent "YOU'D BE MAD TO MISS THIS UPLIFTING REVIVAL" "The production looks and sounds terrific and offers a genuinely bracing new vision of this piece - a mad cross between The Day of the Triffids and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Prowling around in fishnets and skin-tight green spandex and growling out orders to “Feed Me!” from glitter-encrusted lips, Vicky Vox is in complete, voluptuous command – a Mephistopheles who effortlessly exudes a filthy diva-style sense of danger. Jemima Rooper brings moments of heart-rending dignity to the ditsy Audrey I. I don’t think that I have heard 'Somewhere That’s Green' sung with such simplicity and yearning."

The Arts Desk "MONSTROUSLY ENTERTAINING" "This revelatory revival from Maria Aberg embraces the work’s B-movie dichotomy: equal parts dark, gory fable and riotous carnival of delights. There’s a perfect balance of tones: subversive horticultural horror with a gentle emotional core. Jemima Rooper’s 'Somewhere That’s Green'…is heart-stopping in its yearning simplicity (and, last night, a real sunset obligingly matched Howard Hudson’s dreamy lighting). Marc Antolin brings a sweet earnestness to Seymour; their romantic duet, 'Suddenly, Seymour', is exquisitely euphoric." "THE FULL-BLOODED, FEEL-GOOD HIT OF THE SUMMER"

The Guardian "The defining feature of Maria Aberg’s glitter-ball explosion of a show is how she has encouraged her entire company to perform with presence, swagger and absolute abandon. Matt Willis is a revelation as sadistic dentist Orin, plastered in tattoos and gleaming with malice". "A GLEEFUL CELEBRATION OF CAMP AND COLOUR"

Metro "Vicky Vox seduces and menaces in equal parts, as she patrols the stage and demands to be fed, transforming the action from static street scenes to flamboyant spectacle. The narrators Crystal (Seyi Omooba), Ronnette (Christina Modestou), and Chiffon (Renée Lamb) steal the limelight in nearly every scene." "CAMP, QUIRKY and SINISTER"

Time Out "FIERCE and FABULOUS…American drag queen Vicky Vox stalks the stage in killer heels, rainbow wig and skin-tight sequins, belowing 'Feed Me' in a voice like a Chicago house diva whilst spritzing her bits with plant mister. Tom Scutt’s costumes for the finale of 'Don’t Feed The Plants' have to be seen to be believed."

Evening Standard "TRIUMPHANT - what an ebullient end to a glorious season. Jemima Rooper’s perfect for the part (of Audrey) and makes an appealing pair with Marc Antolin’s loveably unassuming Seymour. For the talented Antolin, this is the breakout performance that he has long been promising."
BroadwayWorld.com "The finale of 'Don't Feed The Plant' is some of the best fun you will see on stage this summer" "A BRIGHT, CAMP and HUGELY ENJOYABLE NIGHT OUT"

The Stage "Maria Aberg’s production is modern, snappy as a Venus flytrap and boasts more than a little bite. It’s Ru Paul’s Drag Race blended with B-movie grotesque. Vicky Vox takes over in full, sequinned glory with her seductive voice and filthy cackle. Vox’s powerhouse vocals and withering glare…from her glittered lips, Audrey II’s famous 'Feed me!' catchphrase becomes wonderfully smutty."

Commentaire: The Open Air Theatre's 2018 production of As You Like It was directed by Max Webster and featured a beautiful score of new music by Charlie Fink (Noah and the Whale). Webster's visions for the Forest of Arden made our outdoor setting the perfect backdrop for Naomi Dawson's beautiful design. This joyous re-imagining of Shakespeare's classic comedy was dubbed as "summer fun, pure and simple" (Independent). With notable performances from Danny Kirrane: the “show-stealing, belly swinging, libidinous Touchstone” (Metro) and Olivia Vinall: "mellifluous of voice, blazes increasingly brightly as Rosalind” (Evening Standard).  (plus)

Presse: Evening Standard "What a glorious 2018 season this theatre is settling into" "A BLAZING SHAKESPEARE FOR THE SUMMER" "The original music confirms former Noah and the Whale frontman Charlie Fink as a theatre composer of the first rank"

Time Out "VIBRANT, FUNNY and POLISHED" "it's great fun, taking one of Shakespeare's most amorphous plays and repeatedly hitting comedy gold"

Daily Telegraph "Max Webster's production embraces the craziness...it fizzles with playfulness and lascivious intent"

The Times "GORGEOUS...this is such a joy - a merry muddle of the sweet, tender, bawdy and melancholy" "Olivia Vinall is a clever, vibrant Rosalind; Jacade Simpson an adoreable Silvius"

Daily Mail "What steals the show is Danny Kirrane's turn as tubby fool Touchstone, grappling with his pop-up tent and singing serenades into beer bottles for Amy Booth-Steel as his deliciously simply shepherdess"

BroadwayWorld.com "Edward Hogg imbues Orlando with wit and boyish charm, with funny asides that highlight his instinct for comedy. The perfect summer show that will tickle your funny bone and have you humming the tunes all the way home"

City AM "A production that is willing to take risks...A DELIGHT"

The Arts Desk "A CELEBRATORY, MUSICALLY GLEEFUL revival of Shakespeare's cross-dressing favourite" "Maureen Beattie is terrific - a strong, sardonic presence, with a melancholy based not in personal affection, but a deep sadness at the human conditions"

Independent "The whole production is summer fun, pure and simple"

The Guardian "It captures love's exhilarating madness"

Financial Times "Peppered with bright, touching performances, this is a warm, thoughtful production about transformation on many levels"

Metro “The main vibe is giddy escapism and personal liberation, beautifully encapsulated in Charlie Fink’s pop-splattered score”

Commentaire: The Turn of the Screw marked the Open Air Theatre's first collaboration with English National Opera. Open Air Theatre Artistic Director Timothy Sheader and members of the ENO orchestra brought their award-winning skills to Britten’s masterly reworking of Henry James' classic novella to create "a stunning re-imagination of Britten's ghost opera...REVELATORY" (WhatsOnStage). Soutra Gilmour created a stunning set which housed conductor Toby Purser and 13 members of the ENO orchestra, who all performed "ASTONISHINGLY" (TrendFM). As the sky got darker and night set in, the story accumulated suspense and horror with the cast instilling "a level of dread and trepidation" (The Upcoming).  (plus)

Presse: Sunday Times "OUT OF THIS WORLD...an atmospheric, gripping production by Timothy Sheader."

Daily Telegraph "Chilling show does justice to James's ghostly tale...it's hard to imagine a more aptly evocative setting for Britten's masterly adaptaion than the Open Air Theatre"

Evening Standard "AN OFFERING FROM OUT OF THE SHADOWS There is a feeling of something unworldly...a psychological drama, in which the corruption of innocence is all too real."

The Guardian "This joint venture between the Open Air theatre and English National Opera works superbly well and you even feel a chill to the spine as you watch a battle for possession of children’s souls in the gathering dusk.”

Financial Times "A staging of Britten’s opera that gathers supernatural momentum. Soutra Gilmour’s set is A MASTERPIECE”

The Times "Britten’s score becomes increasingly suggestive of evil forces insidiously whittling away the sanity of trusting innocents."

WhatsOnStage "A stunning re-imagination of Britten's ghost opera...REVELATORY"

Broadway World "ACCOMPLISHED, SOPHISTICATED and DISTURBING"

Observer "The thirteen strong chamber ensemble was impeccable...conducted with superb authority by ENO Mackeraras fellow Toby Purser Timothy Sheader's production was intelligent, cogent and, as the sky darkened, properly spooky."

TrendFM "The opera captures the spooky and supernatural undertones through Britten’s piercingly sensitive and evocative music. This is ASTONISHINGLY PERFORMED by the 13 musicians of the ENO as well as ENO’s Mackerras Fellow, Toby Purser as the orchestra’s conductor.”

Bachtrack "Director Timothy Sheader’s grip on Britten’s opera is extremely strong, bringing a sensitivity that embraced the ghoulish supernatural element of the piece, the deep, flawed humanity of the Governess and the sinister sexual insinuations of Quint’s relationship with Miles. The chances of finding a better production of this any time soon are very slim indeed."

The Upcoming "The composer’s spirit must have been commanding the cast and orchestra at Regent’s Park Theatre on Tuesday evening as their performance encompassed the fear, uncertainty and discomfort originally intended by Myfanwy Piper’s chilling libretto. The cast – along with the outstanding work of conductor Toby Purser and the English National Opera – instil a level of dread and trepidation"

The Stage "Conducting, Toby Purser ratchets up the tension over the two hours and the denser textures of the closing scenes fill the air with a palpable dramatic charge"

Presse: "Women are further presented as saintly care-givers by being Peter Pan-reading nurses in the wartime hospital. But if the historical concepts don’t always fly, the production happily does: this has family summer outing written all over it." Holly Williams for The Independent

"Not everything works. Barrie’s original story is full of mother-figure angst, but the lamenting, angelic mother character who haunts this production feels a bit out of place. And it is never entirely convincing having adults playing children." Claire Allfree for The Telegraph

Commentaire: A l'occacion du 45ème anniversaire de la création du célèbre musical de Tim Rice et Andrew Lloyd Webber, l'Open Air Theatre présente une nouvelle production mise en scène par Timothy Sheader.  (plus)

Presse: The Guardian "A GORGEOUS, THRILLING, HEAVENLY MUSICAL. Wit, lyricism and satirical bite abound in this dramatic revival of the classic rock opera with a first-rate cast. If you need any reminding how skilled British musical actors have become in recent years, this is an evening to persuade and cheer: Tyrone Huntley is brilliant as Judas...Declan Bennett’s restrained Jesus has an unforced charisma, and Anoushka Lucas is a soulful Mary Magdalene. An unexpected and considerable pleasure that really rocks"

Daily Telegraph “AN ALMIGHTY REVELATION Each song is sung with such feeling that the soul of the piece, so volatile in tempo, comes roaring through. Superstar’s potency and its Christ-like radicalism – courting sacrilege, achieving an essence of spiritual intensity – is reborn"

Evening Standard "VIVID and COMPELLING. Each new production needs a sprinkling of directorial genius to give it wings. Delightfully, the Open Air Theatre makes this work soar. Timothy Sheader offers some of the most stylish direction I’ve seen all year”

Sunday Times "The resurrection of the rock opera is cause for celebration"

Time Out "Both ruggedly masculine and flamboyantly fabulous. The real find is relative newcomer Tyrone Huntley as Judas: his soulful howl is the most electrifying instrument in this feverishly full throttle resurrection of a classic show."

Avec: Robyn Cara, Rina Fatania, Danny-Boy Hatchard, Michael Hodgson, Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Shaun Mason and Angela Wynter play multiple roles, with Tia-Lana Chinapyel, Lewis Fernée and Jordan Nash alternating in the title role.

Commentaire: Re-discovering Dickens' original story, Caroline Byrne's production of Oliver Twist created for everyone aged six and over was deemed an 'energetic, creative, clever interpretation'. The company of 8 adult actors, and 3 child actors alternating as Oliver, played a total of 38 characters. The action-packed production mixed Victoriana and contemporary elements and design.  (plus)

Presse: Daily Mail “A RIVETING NEW STAGE PLAY from the Victorian saga.” “Snappy dialogue and brisk scenes take us on a jaunty ride through murky Victorian London…not only is it dark enough to be truly Dickensian and bright enough to fill Regent’s Park with impish delight, Caroline Byrne’s big broad production combines the cunning invention of physical theatre miming with the boisterous joy of Punch and Judy.” “VIVID, GUTSY ENTERTAINMENT”

Radio Times “An exhilarating take on Charles Dickens' classic. The transformations of the actors from character to character were part of the spectacle and compelling to watch; An ENERGETIC, CREATIVE, CLEVER interpretation”

WhatsOnStage “Anya Reiss' impressive adaptation fillets the story very effectively, condensing swathes of plot into neat scenes that propel Oliver's adventures forward.” “AN ACTION-PACKED, THRILLING SHOW with just the right amount of audience interaction to engage and entertain.”

The Guardian “FULL OF INVENTION. Director Caroline Byrne is not afraid of frightening her young audience. Michael Hodgson’s Fagin looks like a pawnbroker down on his luck, dressed in a shiny jacket and scruffy suit. Daniel Hoffman-Gill is thunderingly imposing as workhouse boss Bumble and chief baddy Bill Sikes.” “It is playful, fierce and pleasingly unpatronising”

Sardines “Anya Reiss has met the challenge head on with this adaptation which manages to be both original and faithful to the novel – and that’s quite a balance to have achieved. The children around me seemed to be lapping it up and finding plenty to enjoy”. “Open Air Theatre Regents Park has made a speciality of adapting classics, mostly Shakespeare, for family audiences in recent years and this latest one is worth catching if you can”

BroadwayWorld.com “Gbemisola Ikumelo is excellent and has great fun with the ebullient character of Mrs Corney, who she plays with a very exaggerated West African accent to great comedic effect. She eases into Nancy's big-hearted cockney charm”

UpStagedArts.com “This production manages to show the darker side to Dickens' novel while at the same time being engaging and entertaining, I would definitely recommend going to see it over the summer!”

Commentaire: In our 2017 production of On The Town, Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie directed and choreographed our biggest dance musical to date. McOnie's choreography was widely celebrated by critics, expressing how 'no one can fill a show with exhilarating jazz and beautiful balletic movement quite as explosively as Drew McOnie' (The Stage). Alongside the 'stunning dance ensemble' (Musical Theatre Review), Bernstein's score was 'played with pinpoint precision by the 17-piece orchestra' (Musical Theatre Review), making the production 'a glorious reimagining of Broadway rarity' (The Arts Desk). Many of the cast members were also noted for their individual performances including 'stand-out man' Danny Mac, 'whose effortless tenor gives gorgeous voice to one of the show's loveliest, most mellow numbers' (The Stage), and Siena Kelly: the way she 'dances every step is if her life depends on it' (The Guardian). This production was also nominated for Best Musical Revival in the 2018 Olivier Awards.  (plus)

Presse: Mail on Sunday "Leonard Bernstein’s musical romcom is a glorious Valentine to the Big Apple. It’s a helluva score, pulsating to the JAZZY, BLUESY, SEXY, SLEAZY, EXHILARATING and ROMANTIC rhythms of the city that never sleeps" "'Sex and art don’t mix'...They mix perfectly in this show, the hottest to trot in London Town"
The Times “Stylish, sultry Manhattan musical is ONE HELLUVA SHOW” “LAVISH and IMAGINATIVE…as more performers than you think possible twist and spring and strut and swing in midair, this amphitheatre in Regent’s Park fills with spring fever”
The Guardian “AS DELICIOUS AS ICE-CREAM ON A HOT SUMMER'S DAY” “McOnie’s choreography has a freshly minted zing that captures the youthful, glad-to-be-alive exuberance of its protagonists. As the trio of sailors, Samuel Edwards, Danny Mac and Jacob Maynard, dance athletically and sing tunefully and are immensely likeable…Siena Kelly’s Ivy dances every step is if her life depends on it”
Observer "ON THE TOWN HITS ITS NEW YORK STRIDE in Regent’s Park." "In a dream sequence, night-tinted by Howard Hudson’s wonderful lighting, everyone moves as if they were melting. Peter McKintosh’s set and costume design would have been unimaginable at the Open Air theatre before imaginative Timothy Sheader took over as artistic director."
Financial Times “McOnie’s exuberant work is irresistible. A smart, INFECTIOUS production”
Sunday Times "A SHOW WITH PULLING POWER. On The Town is a high-octane, superslick romp."
Radio Times “A DAZZLING REVIVAL. Director and choreographer Drew McOnie explores the work's full balletic possibilities, and in Peter McKintosh the production has a set and costume designer who has a true artist's way with colour.” “Maggie Steed stands out as the whisky-swigging dragon of a singing teacher Madame Dilly.”
The Arts Desk “Triple threat Danny Mac and co are UNMISSABLE...a glorious reimagining of Broadway rarity” “Crisp-as-Vermouth, towering, scissor-legged Miriam-Teak Lee is so delicious that you wonder where she has been hiding… only to discover that this is, astoundingly, her professional debut.”
WhatsOnStage “Lizzy Connolly, Siena Kelly and Miriam-Teak Lee steal this show. Connolly is hilarious … she is GRACEFUL and HILARIOUS and manages Hildy's comedy with ease and perfect timing”
Daily Telegraph “It looks exquisite, and sounds gorgeous rising to the bravura challenge of the score with it’s clarinet siren wails, clownish shifts of tempo, and thrilling collision of jazz age dreaminess with bombardments of brass.”
Daily Express “VIVACIOUS…the stage erupts in a whirligig of dance and flashing colours; if there is any justice, newcomers Miriam-Teak Lee and Siena Kelly are on their way to stardom, while Lizzy Connolly as a gum-chewing saucebox and veteran Maggie Steed as a Jack Daniel’s-swigging singing teacher are outstanding”
Evening Standard “To the strains of Leonard Bernstein’s beautiful, often haunting, music, the ensemble twirls about the stage in a flurry of colourful costumes.”
The Stage “No one can fill a show with exhilarating jazz and beautiful balletic movement quite as explosively as Drew McOnie” “The stand-out man is Danny Mac whose effortless tenor gives gorgeous voice to one of the show's loveliest, most mellow numbers, Lonely Town; Jacob Maynard brings an IRRESISTIBLE sweetness to the character of Chip; Lizzy Connolly is SCANDALOUSLY SENSATIONAL” “Drew McOnie's sexily hilarious and thrillingly danced revival of a Broadway classic makes THE PERFECT SUMMER TREAT”

"Not everything works. Barrie’s original story is full of mother-figure angst, but the lamenting, angelic mother character who haunts this production feels a bit out of place. And it is never entirely convincing having adults playing children." Claire Allfree for The Telegraph

Commentaire:

Presse: "This new production in the idyllic surroundings of Regent’s Park is the finest I have ever seen."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"Rachel Kavanaugh's revival rightly plays up the story's politics: the only trick she misses, unlike Jeremy Sams's superb 2006 Palladium production, is in not fully showing how tensions between collaborators and anti-fascists infect a party thrown by the captain on the eve of the 1938 Anschluss. But everything else about the show feels right."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Rachel Kavanaugh’s buoyant production is respectful rather than radical, albeit with smart touches of wit and some new musical settings."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Rachel Kavanaugh's revival offers an admirably warm, straightforward and sincerely felt account of its (at times glutinously) sentimental story of nuns and Nazis and a young postulant who brings singing and love back to the motherless, defensively regimented of a widowed naval Captain."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

Commentaire: For once this was a production of “The Beggar’s Opera” set in its original period, allowing the audience to make its own connections between 18th Century and 21st Century politics and society. As such it was much praised as one of the best of the many revivals over the past decades.  (plus)

Giant’s voice pre-recorded by Judi Dench

Commentaire: This was framed around the idea that the first narrator is a troubled child, fleeing a parental quarrel. Sitting on the edge of a forest he conjures up a jumbled fairy-tale, and then falls asleep in his sleeping bag to experience a nightmare which is the show itself. The show attracted great praise, with many critics commenting on how well the show suited an open-air venue. It won the Olivier Award for the Best Musical Revival. It was later announced that the production would be re-created in the Open Air Theatre in New York’s Central Park during July and August 2012.  (plus)

Presse: "Dazzling revival." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Sharp, spirited revival." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"Timothy Sheader’s interpretation, while stylish and good-looking, suffers from a mixture of stridency, undercooked comedy and patchy singing...This is a show that oscillates between excellence and mediocrity." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"An inventive, witty production." Sarah Hemming for The Financial Times

"At three hours this often repetitive show would also benefit from cuts...For all its faults, the strength of the company, Sheader’s witty direction and, above all, the spectacularly-lit woodland location, ensure that this fairy-tale musical casts a pretty potent spell." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"The most satisfying and revelatory version of this show I’ve seen since Richard Jones’ brilliant London staging in 1990." Mark Shenton for The Stage

Commentaire: This was a greatly praised revival, with much acclaim for Samantha Spiro, but it was the production itself and the brilliant choreography of Stephen Mear that captured most of the notices. Everyone remarked on the brilliant waiters’ dance and especially the sequence where the cast becomes a steam train, a top hat turns into a chimney, and boaters turn into whirling wheels – described as a moment of “theatrical genius”.  (plus)

Presse: HENRY HITCHING'S FOR THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Stephen Mear’s crisp choreography and Timothy Sheader’s pacy, clear direction ensure that this is a buoyant production."
PAUL VALE for THE STAGE says, "vivacious, colourful production."
KAT BROWN for THE LONDON PAPER says, "Beautifully staged production."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "It’s really rather wonderful...On opening night it began to rain, leaving me to wonder if Hello, Dolly! would morph too quickly into Bye-Bye Dolly. But no one noticed or cared. It was all too tuneful, too bright, too much fun to be stopped by English wetness."
MAXIE SZALWINSKA for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Jerry Herman's nostalgia-fest of a musical is big, brash and silly, forever teetering on the brink of saccharine. Timothy Sheader's staging offers a pure jolt of light relief, carefully building up audience goodwill with its pretty, sometimes striking stage pictures."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Fresh and likable revival."

Commentaire: This revival had one of the most illustrious casts possible: Topol, world famous for his Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof”, Thomas Borchert, the leading star of the German and Austrian musical theatre, Linda Thorson, the Avengers girl, and Millicent Martin (all-time favourite, last seen in “Frasier”) together with the already experienced but relative newcomer, Lisa O’Hare, “a star in the making if ever there was” (Sun newspaper). With excellent choreography and with an exciting production from the new artistic director of Regent’s Park, this was very warmly received.  (plus)

Presse: LIZ HOGGARD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Witty, camp, extremely entertaining."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "If the musical stands up well in Regent's Park, it is because of the easy familiarity of the Lerner and Loewe songs and because Timothy Sheader's production is cast from exceptional strength."

Commentaire: The new libretto enlarged the role of Dick Deadeye, making him a kind of commentator on the action, and providing him with a series of asides to “modernise” the proceedings. This was not especially welcomed by the majority of the critics, but the overwhelming high-spirits of the show, and especially the glorious over-the-top performance by Desmond Barritt, made this an evening that was almost universally praised.  (plus)

Presse: SARAH HEMMING for the FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It is hard to resist such a well-sung and vivaciously delivered staging. And the cherry on the cake is Desmond Barrit's dyspeptic Sir Joseph, a vision in naval regalia. He smoulders with self-importance as he recalls his effortless and completely unmerited rise through the ranks. A treat."
FIONA MOUNTFORD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Irresistibly jaunty new production...the well-drilled cast, including a joyously camp chorus of tars who imply water pistols would be their weapons of choice in a combat situation, sail through some of Gilbert and Sullivan's greatest hits."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Well-cast production....Ian Talbot's otherwise enjoyable production is hindered rather than helped by Herbert Appleman's revised libretto which turns Dick Deadeye into a choric figure busily explaining the objects of Gilbertian satire."
IANS JOHNS for THE TIMES says, "This Pinafore under Ian Talbot’s command is more jolly knowingness than the pointed caricature of the British class system that it’s supposed to be."

Commentaire: The original was rather bitchily described by Noel Coward as “Parsifal without the jokes”, and forty years later the critics reviewed this revival as “a hugely over-long and desperately unwieldy Arthurian hotch-potch” and as “seventeen hummable songs hung on a hokey story-line”.  (plus)

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Boring, tuneless."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "It's not only an amiably pleasing show but it also reminds us how politicians appropriate popular culture for their own ends."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "You often wish the show had more bite ....Still, there are some nice tunes and some enjoyable acting."
PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Charming."

Commentaire: The original 1987 London production had a book by Richard Eyre using the eight songs from the original film version and incorporating an additional ten songs from other Cole Porter musicals. This was a different version with a book by Arthur Kopit - a version which had opened on Broadway in April 1998 where it ran for just 144 performances. The Kopit version also incorporated songs from other Cole Porter musicals - but a different selection of songs from the Richard Eyre version. Although based on the same story with the same characters, these were two very different versions.  (plus)

Commentaire: With a cast of 17, this open-air production was generally felt to lack the anger and rage that should underlie the surface jollity, and to have lost some of its bite by being played in the open-air. However, it was still recognised as having a message as relevant today as ever.  (plus)

Presse: MARK COOK for TIME OUT says, "Satire with a slightly dulled edge."

SARAH HEMMING for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, " A brittle, funny and polished production then, but one that doesn't quite deliver the full emotional impact of this highly charged show."

RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The show's contemporary appositeness has dimmed."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Call it music-hall with teeth, vaudeville with bite."

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "What makes the show so moving, ... is its ability to catch the texture of ordinary life."

Commentaire: Based on the book by Mark Twain, the show was first produced on Broadway in November 1927. It was revived in 1943 with six new songs, including the showstopper “To Keep My Love Alive”. In the 1943 revival, which opened just five days before Lorenz Hart’s death, all the characters appeared in military uniforms. The first London production was at Daly’s Theatre October 10th 1929 with Harry Fox and Constance Carpenter. It was given a more “English” title - “A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur” - and ran just 43 performances.  (plus)

Commentaire: Autumn the production went on tour, including playing The Forum Theatre Billingham Cleveland around 17 September 1991, and Theatre Royal Brighton from 14 to 19 October 1991.  (plus)

Presse: "After the second rude interruption, Louise Gold, as Adriana declared it was a lovely day. Huddled under our macs and brollies, we believed her. And when the gleefully statuesque, not-so-pure Gold ripped into the splendid trio of "Sing For Your Supper," we would have believed anything." Michael Coveney - The Observer, 28 July '91
"The adaptation softens the character of Adriana - Louise Gold plays her delightfully, as a woman whose sexual potential is being far from fully tapped. There's an aura of surplus desire about her that is both comic and wistful. It's characteristic that at the end - Gold doesn't freak out but coos like a rampant dove." Paul Taylor - Independent, 26 July '91
"Falling In Love With Love", sung with exquisite sweetness by Louise Gold, a monument to precariously-controlled wifely patience…. But it is "Sing For Your Supper", trilled in harmony by Miss Gold, Gillian Bevan and Jenny Galloway, which stops the show. Do go." Jack Tinker - The Daily Mail, 25th July '91

Commentaire: Originally produced in New York April 1937 it was a show with a large cast of teenagers, no stars and modest scenery. It also offered a larger collection of Rodgers & Hart hit songs than any other of their shows. It was a very profitable hit in the USA. However, it waited over 40 years before this, its British premiere. The book was re-written by George Oppenheimer, changing most of the character names and re-arranging the order of some of the scenes. A number of performers whose names were announced in the pre-publicity never actually appeared - though no reason was ever given - and the production itself was roundly condemned for its “stunning awfulness and inanity”. The cast fared no better, described as “universally unable to sing, dance, act or even move on stage with any semblance of adequacy.”  (plus)

Commentaire: Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s “The Admirable Bashville”, this was the first musical to be produced in the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and required a special area to be excavated to accommodate the small orchestra. The experiment was well received, and the same production was given a second outing in the park the following year.  (plus)
